Who is Michael?

Melbourne based artist, Michael Burrowes, was born in Sydney in 1984.

Michael was set to be an artist from childhood, being inspired greatly by his grandfather. By the time he was in his teens, he attended Arts Project Australia and was forming his own art practice.

These days, Michael is heavily involved in his local art community- working out of many local studios and volunteering at galleries. He primarily works with his friends at MK Education, working towards shared goals and supporting his fellow artists.

Michael has participated in various group exhibitions in public spaces and galleries, as well as two solo exhibitions. These solo exhibitions focus on climate change and the soul respectively, diving deep into themes of self reflection and animal rights. Recently, Michael has developed a business called ‘Michael’s divine palette’, an endeavour to sell his art.

Michael is experimental and likes to mix up all kinds of mediums and techniques. In his painting and pastel work Michael uses bright and emotive colours and expressive brushstrokes to represent freedom and reflect the gentle soul within him. His drawings of people differ from his paintings, he adopts a more graphic style with strong line work, to represent the people and emotions around him. His portraits are inspired by cartoons and TV shows like Scooby Doo and The Addams Family.

As an artist with a disability, Michael’s visions for the future include teaching children about disability and art in schools. With his own art, he would like to travel around the world and deepen his spiritual and artistic knowledge through other cultures.
